Today's post is based on last night's Top Chef episode where the chefs were told to create a dish based on one of the lines from the 12 Days of Christmas song. What do you cook for "10 Lords a Leaping"?
It got me thinking - what does this song mean.
So - first, here is the man in black to sing it.
Now - here is a synopsis of what the lyrics mean found from somewhere out on the web.
| On the first day of Christmas | |
| My true love gave to me | |
| A partridge in a pear tree | (The partridge is Jesus, the tree is the cross.) |
| Two turtle doves | (The two testaments, Old and New.) |
| Three french hens | (Three gifts of the wise men., three Christian virtues, |
| or 3 persons of the Trinity.) | |
| Four colly [black] birds | (Four gospels) |
| Five golden rings | (Five books of Moses) |
| Six geese a-laying | (Six days of creation) |
| Seven swans a- swimming | (Seven gifts of the Holy Spirit - Rom. 12:6-8) |
| Eight maids a-milking | (Eight beatitudes - Matt. 5-7) |
| Nine ladies dancing | (Nine fruit of the Spirit - Gal. 5:22-23) |
| Ten Lords a-leaping | (Ten commandments) |
| Eleven pipers piping | (Eleven apostles who did not fail like Judas) |
| Twelve drummers drumming | (Twelve articles of the Apostles' Creed). And finally because I am sarcastic and can not leave well enough alone - here is the best rendition of the song. |
Here is my fav 12 Days version. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Fe11OlMiz8
Of course, you've probably already seen it, it's been viewed 9.3 million times on YouTube.
